Alpha Chapter
"Omega Phi Beta in essence was designed to EMPOWER and STRENGTHEN women. The sisters began to infiltrate a marginalized community who had no outlet, no connection, and NO LEADERS. This community was the women of color on the SUNY Albany Campus. OMEGA PHI BETA became their leader". -Lori A. Rodriguez, Alpha Chapter, Spring 1991 |
Seventeen diverse women desired to establish an organization that would fight against the injustices suffered by our gender. We aim to positively impact our community and provide our members with a place to voice their concerns and opinions freely. On March 15th, 1989, at the University at Albany, the legacy came alive, establishing the first chapter of Ωmega Φhi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Chapter.
Historically, there have been many issues facing women; unfortunately, we have not yet succeeded in overcoming these matters, which is why we should unite with one another to overcome the injustices suffered by our gender in this male-dominated world. We acknowledge that many women have faced many challenges to free us from the adversities we have endured. As a result, we pay tribute to these women who have attempted to gain our true independence and continue to do so. Alpha Chapter held its first Women's Conference in 1991, where women from various groups on campus were allowed a venue to speak freely on the issues that affected our gender. We demonstrate our commitment to women's issues through panels, workshops, community service, and various forums. Our community is an essential part of our existence. We aim to create a collective of individuals of different backgrounds to share their insight, experiences, morals, and values to engage society better. As leaders of today, we set an example for the leaders of tomorrow. We continue to build a strong foundation for those to follow before us. The sisters of Omega Phi Beta believe sisterhood is a unifying force—women who come together with the same purpose share this everlasting bond. However, sisterhood is not a one-way street; to receive the rewards of true sisterhood, you must first exemplify within yourself that you are willing to contribute your all to your own progression and, in turn, the building of your sisters. Let it be forever known, the most precious gift is not anything tangible but lies in the heart of true sisterhood. Throughout our history, the Alpha chapter has crossed through its doors over 100 women. Women who react to a need for change; women who believe and work to empower others, all women; women who will continue to struggle against the injustices of our gender; women who carry Ωmega Φhi Beta and our chapter forever close to their hearts. We built this profile to be more than just a few random electronic pages on the internet. We build it to provide a place where sisters now and those 15 years from now can come and reminisce. We made it for the world to see and understand our organization's beauty, understand the value of our sisterhood, and note our progression over time. We built it to tell a story that is far from ending. |
